Things to do in Odessa, here are some tips and some visitors comments on places, worth reading really

Hotels

You can choose to stay in hotels or in apartments, it is really only a personal choice and how well you want to live and how much cooking you want to do yourself and where you want to live.

Renting an apartment really requires you to have some knowledge of Russian/ Ukrainian or you can easily get tricked to get a bad apartment. Apartment itself can be fantastic, but the building it is in, can be in terrible state(Russian style really).

However, it can also give you the touch of authenticity if you want to experience this.

We can help you out here, if you want to try this option.

To give you a taste of apartment selections possible, I have this link for you to use;

http://www.katamarantour.com/index.php?p=apart&lang=eng

I recommend Londonskaya or Mozart hotels for good comfort and central locations.

Odessa hotel if you want western new style, and willing to take taxi to centre or make walks (20 minutes).

Here are the hotels we use every time we are in Odessa now:

Black sea hotels

http://www.bs-hotel.com.ua/e_main.html

They have two hotels, both are quite central and good quality for a nice price.

First one, oldest and rooms a bit worn down but ok quality and service is good, and good food in restaurant. Breakfast is ok, and they serve you in nice locations.

Black Sea Hotel

The eleven-storeyed building of the hotel “Black Sea” is situated in the very historical centre of Odessa, only five minutes on foot from the railway station. The hotel accommodates 207 comfortable rooms. Each room has air-conditioner, bathroom or shower, toilet, telephone, TV-set.

The hotel includes restaurant-bar with different fish courses, express-bar with wide range of alcohol and alcohol-free drinks, different starters and confectionary products. You will be pleasantly struck there by the superb service. There is also a night club there.

One can find in the lobby of the hotel the currency exchange, souvenir shop and the service bureau, where one can send fax to any country of the world or make a copy.

You may order breakfast, dinner or supper right into the room at any time. The hotel has also a laundry, where you may have your clothes cleaned and your shoes repaired. The Black Sea hotel possesses its own comfortable swimming-pool (the usage of which is free of charge for the guests of the hotel), gymnasium, sauna, solarium, massage room.

Next recommendation is;

This is the hotel me and my wife use every time we stay in Odessa now. Price is good and rooms are modern and clean. Service good and food ok. However the best thing is, if you like markets (Russian style) and you want to be close (15 minutes walk) from centre, there is your choice.

We like it and use it, simple as that. Several categories of rooms, however price around 450 Gryvnas ( 1 USD = 5.05 Gryvnas) gives you a good room, howewer you can get very nice rooms for around 550 Gryvnas.

Chernoye More New hotel

Price from: USD 78 Location: Central area

In 2006 there has appeared a new 3-star hotel Chernoye More on the 7-9th floors of a brand new shopping mall. Being close to the Odessa center, the hotel offers attractive rates and good quality. Tidy rooms of delicate pastel shades, light and spacious lobby and halls, green spaces with lush palm trees create relaxing and cozy atmosphere.

If you want to indulge in luxury and have a nice time for an affordable price, here is a choice.

However in fall and winter it is far from centre and you can not enjoy the beach and arcade only 5 minutes away from hotel.

But location and rooms are very nice. Recommend for stay in spring and summer.

Four star hotel Palace Del Mar is situated in the most picturesque district of Odessa-in Arcadia. The building of the hotel is the original example of the classical style. After the reconstruction it was skilfully equipped with various modern conveniences. Apart from luxurious comfortable accommodations the Palace Del Mar may offer its visitors SPA-centre and clinic, which are also known as the centres of the international association “Meramed”. Here you can receive a full range of treatments, including massage, hydrocolonotherapy, skin-peels, sauna, face-lifts aqua-aerobics, etc.

The hotel possesses 34 rooms, including presidental suite, 1 Del Mar suite, 2 exclusive penthouses, 2 deluxe rooms,7 business-class rooms, 15 Superior rooms, and 8 Standard rooms, ATM machine, currency exchange. The price for the accommodation includes taxes and breakfast. Payment may be accomplished in cash, or by means of the following credit cards: Visa, Master Card, Eurocard and American Express.

The hotel can offer to its guests free parking, guard, service in rooms, business-centre, open swimming-pool, sauna, tennis court, medical centre, SPA-centre, Beaty centre, Mediterranean and European restaurants. All the rooms contain satellite TV, access to internet, mini-bar, safe, hair-dryer, dressing-gown, slippers.

Continental hotel

Price from: USD 101 Location: Center

After thorough reconstruction, the new comfortable business-hotel Continental has occupied a beautiful 19th century mansion on the central street of Odessa. Conveniently located on the very Deribasovskaya Street, the hotel offers high quality service and rooms, part of which faces a quiet courtyard with a century old chestnut tree.

London hotel

Price from: USD 128 Location: Central area

In the central and quiet green area of Odessa a 4-star hotel has opened in October 2006. Short stroll from the hotel via broad Alexandrovsky Avenue walking area will lead you to the main Deribasovskaya Street. Ecologically pure materials in the rooms interior, drinkable tap water due to the modern water-purification system and a number of non-smoking rooms – this hotel was designed with travelers’ healthy life style in mind.

Londonskaya hotel

Price from: USD 118 Location: Center

There is a hotel of this kind in every old big city. Old-fashioned building, luxuriant interior, superb location and a long list of famous tenants. The Londonskaya Hotel is that hotel in Odessa. Good hotel, very good location.

Mozart hotel

Price from: USD 125 Location: Center

Mozart Hotel is a 4-star hotel in the very heart of Odessa. Superb location – right by the famous Opera Theatre – and classic style of the building lend special charm to this small private hotel. Wi-Fi Internet access.

Probably the best rooms in Odessa, very central and good location. Breakfast not so good. Service ok but could be better.

Odessa hotel

Price from: USD 171 Location: Central area

Odessa Hotel is situated at the Odesa Sea Trading Port, only in a few steps from the famous Potemkin Stairs. Location is perfect for fares and exhibitions visitors. Very modern and good hotel, good service and good food, however location require taxi to and from centrum

However it is close to Potemkin stairs.

Otrada hotel

Price from: USD 157 Location: Central area, Otrada Beach.

In 2005 a small hotel was opened in a beautiful mansion of 19th century right by the seaside on the Franzusky Boulevard in Odessa. Proximity to the beach and high quality standards make the Otrada Hotel a favourite for summer vacations. And at wintertime low off-season rates draw guests to the hotel too

Arcadia Plaza hotel

Price from: USD 126 Location: Arcadia Beach area

Small 3-star hotel within 10 minutes walk to the famous Arcadia Beaches, booming with nightlife in the summertime. The hotel rooms have classical design. Cozy balconies face the beautiful hotel garden, tennis courts and swimming pool.Very nice location, but far from centre. Close to beach, a clear hit in summer though.

Chornoye More hotel

Price from: USD 87 Location: Central area

Close to the center of the city, only ten minutes walk from the railway station, the Chornoye More Hotel has customary amenities of a standard Ukrainian hotel. It offers more or less reasonable prices, though least expensive rooms are not perfect. The hotel proved to be a good option for tourist groups due to number of similar rooms.Old fashioned (soviet style) hotel

Lots of tourists stay here, especially package tourism.

Frapolli hotel

Price from: USD 108 Location: Center

Charming historical building in the very center of Odessa has recently become a small hotel. All the hotel rooms have air-conditioning, deposit box, minibar, computer, Internet access, satellite TV.

Lermontovsky hotel

Price from: USD 60 Location: Central area, Lanzeron Beach

In the beginning of 2006 a 3-star hotel has appeared in the central green area of Odessa. Right by the charming park Shevchenko and in 20 minutes stroll through the park to the Lanzheron Beach, the Lermontovsky hotel is a perfect place for vacations or health restoration. Each of 33 hotel rooms has air-conditioning, direct dial phone, cable TV, hairdryer and bathroom accessories.

Morskoy hotel

Price from: USD 129 Location: Arcadia Beach

If you are visiting Odessa for its beaches and bright nightlife this hotel will definitely meet your expectations. Located right on the seashore by the sandy beach of Arcadia, the Morskoy Hotel is in a few steps from Ibiza, Itaka, Pago, and Tropicana Night Clubs. So this place is not for solitude seekers in summertime. Nice hotel, but on the beach far from centre, clear hit in the summer.

Palladium hotel

Price from: USD 101 Location: Central area, by the rail station

The Palladium Hotel is not for the solitude seekers. With one of the most popular Night Clubs on the lower floor (open October-April), the modern style hotel offers extravagant rooms with equally extravagant names.

Passage hotel

Price from: USD 56 Location: Center

Passage is a tourist class hotel located right in the very heart of Odessa historical center. The beautiful building faces the Deribasovskaya Street and Sobornaya square park with the Cathedral. This hotel is for budget-minded travelers, who do not wish to spend lots on accommodation and willing to set up with some imperfections. Very old fashioned, Rooms not good, but you can find a bargain for large rooms here. Very central location, and gives you feel of being in old castle almost.

Yunost hotel

Price from: USD 44 Location: Franzusky Boulevard, Arcadia area

Located within 10 minutes walk to the seaside and famous Arcadia Beaches, the Yunost Hotel is a medium-priced option for summer holidays in Odessa. After recent renovation the hotel offers freshly remodeled rooms, tidy and brisk restaurant. Plus, friendly and hospitable personnel was always a merit of the Yunost hotel. New hotel, far from centre, maybe a choice in summer, lots of tourists here.

Outside Odessa, and areas to visit in southern Ukraine

Visit the Crimea region.

If you are going to the Crimea it is a 12 hour overnight train ride costing around 10 USD (2 persons sleeper 25 USD, very nice!). If you buy your ticket on the day you are leaving (not recommended) there is one group of cashier windows where you buy your ticket in the train station. If you buy your ticket on any other day (i.e. at least one day in advance) there is a completely separate group of cashier windows where the ticket must be purchased. As the lines can take up to 30 minutes make sure you are in the right one. Nobody in the train station will speak any international language other than Russian. In Simferopol you can take a trolleybus to Yalta via Alushta. The beaches on Crimea in summer are awfully crowded and the beachresorts are very noisy. Its better to go to East Crimea on the Sea of Azov.

If you need tips here, I can provide you with a list of activities, hotels and so forth to make you going for weeks in Crimea.

It’s a fantastic place to visit in spring and summer, even In fall if weather is good.

So I recommend people to go there.

Either by train or by taxi. A taxi will run you around 150-200 USD for up to 3 persons with luggage.

I hope you will try Ukraine some day, it is really worth the experience. Especially Odessa which is a city which can serve as your entry point into Ukraine. It is really worth the money spent, and you will get to see lots of history, mixed with modern lifestyle in the ever so lively Odessa center, with clubs and restaurants.

Please follow my article series on Odessa, as i will write more about its nightlife and the potential for the young spirited people wanting to see Ukraine at its best.

As landscape matures, things change. Garden design is the process of designing the layout and planting of domestic gardens while keeping this change under control. But as people’s lifestyles change the areas once used for kids play or for dining out evenings, may no longer be needed. Furthermore, in case the house you bought came with mature plantings that do not any more look healthy or suit your taste, the time has come for you to understand what landscape design is and why should you revive your garden by re-modeling the space and focusing on the plantation you want and covers your needs.

Garden owners became increasingly involved in garden design during the twentieth century and there was considerable expansion in the garden designers’ profession. Specifically, education on garden design has emerged from the older traditions of training and most garden designers are currently trained in design and horticulture. Over the years, well-known garden designers obtain an expert knowledge of plants, their habits and their needs. Most importantly, garden designers focus on constructing an outdoor space that is not only beautiful to see, but also feasible to manage and corresponds to the needs of the particular house residents. That is the reason why elements of garden design include landform and planting design, water features like fountains and ponds, garden lighting, sculpture and garden furniture.

As re-modeling of houses and gardens has turned out to be an “in” thing to do these days, more and more people consider altering their garden’s design and begin looking for possible ideas that will enhance their existing living space. If you are convinced that redesigning your home garden is a necessary step towards the outdoor space of your dreams, then the first thing you should do is to take a hard and honest look at what you have and reassess it so you can make improvements to your life and your lifestyle. If for example, you want to hide the garage walls from your view or to conceal the garbage and recycling area, consider shrub plantings, but make sure that once they are fully grown they will not obstruct access to the area you wish to “hide.”

It is important to landscape your yard in conjunction with your home’s size as well as its style and structure. As you are designing your outdoor space, keep in mind that trees get taller and cast deeper shades, bushes outgrow their original compactness and places in the garden and plants in pots at some point need to be transferred to bigger containers.

Remember that landscaping should only serve to enhance your home, as plants and trees must be in scale and balance with each other, as well as with your home, so as not to detract attention away! Spend your money wisely by planning the type of shrubs and trees you will purchase in conjunction with the type of home you own.

Green building is more than the actual construction of your home, though that is a big part of the process. It is a beginning to end process which begins with the selection of your land, the design of your dream home, the materials and practices used during construction and finally, how you operate and maintain your dream home once it is completed. You can incorporate as many or as few of these elements into your home’s design as you choose.

You decide how “Green” you want to be.

Let’s look at the four basic elements in Green Building:

1. Increasing energy efficiency

2. Materials selected for building your home

3. Increasing the efficiency of water usage both in and outside of your home

4. Improving air quality, which improves the health and productivity of your family

There are many parts to each element. Let’s look at each of these in a little more detail

1. Increasing Energy Efficiency

Advanced Framing – Use a framing contractor who can apply advanced framing technique during the construction of your home. This creates a structurally sound home with improved energy efficiency, and lowers material and labor costs. This technique replaces lumber with insulation material and maximizes the wall that is insulated, improving the R-value of the home. On average, advanced framing uses 30% less lumber, which reduces the building costs and saves 2% to 4% of the total energy use. Hot Water Heater – Water heating can account for 14% to 25% of the energy consumed in your home. To increase the efficiency of your hot water heater, locate it near the highest point of usage. This is typically near the shower followed closely by the clothes washer. Pipes – Insulate the hot and cold water pipes within 3 feet of the hot water heater. This reduces standby heat loss. Your hot water heater is continuously heating the piping and water in it, even when no water is being used. Household Appliances – A green built home features appliances that are as energy efficient as possible. The U. S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have developed a program called Energy Star which labels those appliances meeting strict energy efficient criteria. The typical household spends $1,900 a year on energy bills. As you can see in the diagram above, a great deal of that energy is consumed by the appliances in your home. ENERGY STAR qualified appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models. Just look for the Energy Star label. The Federal Trade Commission requires that refrigerators, freezers, water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers and window air conditioners be labeled with an Energy Guide Label. The label for a hot water heater is shown here. This hot water heater uses 268 therms per year of energy and is being compared to other similar models which use anywhere from 238 to 273 therms per year. This model’s estimated yearly operating cost is $162.When comparing different appliance brands for your new home, be sure to look at their estimated energy consumption. This will impact the operating cost of your home for years to come. Air Sealing – This is advanced caulking which is a part of the airtight drywall approach (ADA). Specifically, caulk or gasket drywall is installed on exterior walls at the top and bottom plates, windows and door frames; on interior walls at the intersections with exterior ceilings; and at electrical, plumbing or mechanical penetrations in the drywall. This approach minimizes heat loss in your home. Work with your drywall contractor to see if he/she uses this method. Radiant Barrier – Reflect heat away from your home by installing a radiant barrier (a sheet of aluminum foil with paper backing) on the underside of your roof. This significantly lowers your cooling costs by reducing your heat gains through your ceiling by 95%. Insulation – Add insulation to your attic to keep the heat in your house. There are some environmentally friendly insulation products made from recycled blue jeans, soybeans, cotton or newspapers. Solar Power – If the sun shines on your home for most of the day in the winter, you have the potential for solar power to reduce your energy costs. A good solar design allows the winter sun to reach a thermal mass like a tile floor which holds heat and radiates it into your home for a period of time. Lighting – Install high-efficiency lighting systems with advanced lighting controls. This allows you to only use the light when you need it. Replace traditional incandescent lights with energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. These bulbs will use 75% less electricity and last up to 10 times longer. When designing your home or remodeling project, introduce natural daylight into as many places as possible. Thermostat – Use a programmable thermostat to provide you and your family the comfort you want day and night while minimizing heating use when you don’t need it. Ducts – Seal your ducts with mastic and insulate them to R-11. This minimizes the heat loss from your home. Paints – You can mix non-toxic ceramic powder into your interior paint to insulate your walls and reduce the amount of heat passing through to the outside. These ceramic particles create a radiant barrier that reflects the heat back into the room. Redirect The Heat – If you have a ceiling fan, redirect the heat back into your room by reversing the direction of the blades to counterclockwise. This brings the heat back down into your room.

2. Materials Selected for Building Your Home

Plastic Lumber – This product can be used for non-structural applications such as fences, benches, decks, retaining walls, and picnic tables. It is weather and insect resistant, and will not crack, splinter or chip. It does not need painting and will not leach chemicals into the ground or surface water. By doing this, you minimize the amount of lumber used in your home, reduce your ongoing maintenance costs, and you won’t harm your local habitat. The US is home to 4.5% of the population but is responsible for over 15% of the world’s wood consumption. Engineered Wood – This combines the raw materials of wood veneer and fiber with adhesives to produce such laminated lumber as wood veneers, I-beams and roof and floor trusses. The manufacturing process uses fast growing, small diameter trees, allowing more than 80% of the log to be used in the end product. This produces a product which is very consistent and stable while decreasing the impact on a natural resource. Fiber Cement Siding – This is a composite of cement and wood fiber reclaimed from wood processing waste or small diameter, fast growing trees. It produces a siding which is durable and low maintenance. Many fiber-cement composites offer a 50-year warranty, which increases the value of your home and decreases the maintenance costs. Brick -The process of extracting clay for brick results in limited wasted material. Brick has a limitless lifespan and can be recycled or salvaged after demolition. Recycling – The efficient use of materials when building Green comes in two forms. First, recycle construction waste and use reclaimed building materials during construction when appropriate. Once your home is finished, practice responsible recycling of the materials you use every day. Design – When working with your architect or designer, use standard dimensions, engineered wood and stacked floor plans to reduce the overall volume of lumber used as well as the volume of waste.

3. Increasing the Efficiency of Water Usage Both In and Outside of Your Home

Porous Paving Schemes – Watertight, or “impervious,” surfaces suchas paved driveways, walkways and patios don’t allow storm water runoff to infiltrate into the ground’s aquatic systems. Using uncompacted gravel, crushed stone and open or porous paving blocks for walkways and other light traffic areas minimizes the number of impervious surfaces on your property, allowing storm water runoff. Rainwater Collection – Rainwater collected from your roof is a free source of landscape irrigation water. This collection system consists of a suitable roof and guttering system, a storage tank and a simple filtration unit. Low Impact Development (LID) – This innovative approach mimics your land’s original method of water run-off instead of disposing and treating storm water in large, costly, end-of-pipe facilities. This can come in the form of open spaces, vegetated rooftops, reduced street widths and curbs, pervious parking lots and sidewalks, medians and other buffer zones using more vegetation. Plumbing – Design your home to use recycled water for toilet flushing. Use ultra low-flush toilets and low-flow shower heads. Some older toilets use 3-7 gallons per flush while an ultra low-flow toilet uses less than 1.6 gallons per flush.

A family of 4, each showering for 5 minutes per day will use 700 gallons of water per week – a 3 year drinking supply for 1 person in the US. Using a high performance shower head uses 1 – 1.5 gallons of water per minute – up to 60% less than a traditional shower head.

In Your Yard – Mulch exposed soils in your garden beds and improve that soil with compost to a depth of 8-13 inches to increase the ability to hold water. Select plants that have low water and pesticide needs. Planting trees not only beautifies your yard, but will also increase the value of your home while decreasing your impact on the environment. A single mature tree can provide nearly $300 in energy and resource values in terms of cooling, erosion and pollution control. Plus they reduce your “carbon foot print.” Putting the right plants in the right place and developing quality, healthy soil means less watering in the summer, less need for chemicals and less waste to worry about. Chemicals – Avoid outdoor chemicals and fix oil and other fluid leaks to prevent contamination of the water runoff. According to the NY State Attorney General’s office, 95% of pesticides used on residential lawns are considered possible carcinogens by the EPA. Hot water – Use recirculating systems for centralized hot water distribution or utilize “on demand” systems vs. traditional hot water tanks.

4. Improving Air Quality, Which Improves the Health and Productivity of Your Family

The EPA ranks indoor pollution among the top 5 environmental risks. Unhealthy air is found in up to 30% of new and renovated buildings. The electricity generated by fossil fuels for a single home puts more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than 2 average cars. Carpet – Using a low pile or less allergen attracting carpet and pad greatly improves air quality. Wool or PET carpet (made from recycled pop bottles) are good choices. In addition, at installation, have the carpet tacked down, not glued, to reduce pollutants. Many Green Built designs minimize the use of carpeted surfaces, replacing them with hard surfaces which don’t have these pollutants and are easier to keep free of dust, mold and mildew. Paints – Use low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds, such as formaldehyde) paints. Ventilation – While you want to seal your home to prevent heat loss, this creates a need for mechanical ventilation. Ventilation can be provided by quiet fans with automatic controls or by heat recovery ventilators. Talk to your HVAC contractor for the best system for your home’s design. Construction materials – To prevent microbial contamination, select materials that are resistant to microbial growth. Drainage – Provide effective drainage from the roof and surrounding landscape, as well as allow proper drainage of air conditioning coils. Window treatments – Avoid synthetic window coverings or those that cannot be cleaned easily.

Even though there is a lot to think about when using Green Building techniques and principles, it is manageable and doable. We here at UBuildIt can help you work with your architect or designer, subcontractors and suppliers to help you build or remodel your dream home while minimizing your impact on the environment. Taking the time to plan and build or remodel your dream home using UBuildIt and Green Building will positively impact you and generations to come.

Pipe leakage is a common problem in the majority of the households. There are various reasons for it, discovering which we may or may not be able to fix is the problem; most solutions revolve around changing the pipes or things of that nature. But this may costs extra money, as good as paying the plumber and getting it done.

Then how do we fix pipes? , The only way a pipe can be actually fixed is by intellect. Use your knowledge to do so. Try and figure out the problem yourself and then try and fix it .First step in checking if the water pipes are leaking or not relies on the checking process, where every faucet, house bib and showers in and out of the house are tested to discover the problem. It includes dishwasher, washing-machines, appliances etc.

While you are shutting off all your fixtures, make sure that there are not any drippy faucets, and that your toilets are not making any strange noises, for this will not allow you to get an accurate reading of the situation. If you have a drippy faucet, or noisy toilet you should repair it immediately and do this test afterwards. A noisy toilet is a toilet that is continually making strange noise when it is not being used. Now remove the meter lid and expose the meter so you could see the numbers. (It is very important that you replace the lid to the water meter every time you walk away from it because someone walking bye can step in it and hurt themselves).

Turn on the building shut off valve to your house only. This will get water to your house system and pressurize it again, give it about 15 minutes to refill the pipes. In the meantime, go through your house sink faucets, and turn off all the angle stops which are located in your sink cabinets. You are just double checking yourself at this point. By the time you are done shutting off all the angle stops to your sink faucets, the system is full usually. Also, shut off the valves to your washer machine hot and cold water, and the refrigerator water line if you have and ice maker. Check your meter again. If the meter is stopped at this point you have a problem somewhere between your shut offs and your faucets.

This is the final step I could share with you. Go to your water heater and turn off the cold valve. The cold water line feeds the right inlet to the water heater and is marked with a “C” for cold. Now you are isolating the hot from the cold. If the meter stops at this point there is obviously a serious problem with your hot water system. If it does not stop there is a problem with the cold water system. At this point, there is a possibility for a slab leak in your underground water lines, you should call a plumber.

Okay, so the Bakugan Battle Arena isn’t absolutely necessary to play the Bakugan Battle game. It’s not like it’s a part of the rules or anything. But the Battle Arena will make the game more fun for any young boy that loves to play, and here are 3 reasons why.

1. Save your tables and counter tops. As you probably already know–and may have fretted about–these little battlers come rolled up into balls, and only deploy when thrown hard against an unyielding surface.

Unfortunately, these “unyielding” surfaces all too often end up with small, yet very noticeable and unfortunately unfix-able dents. Half an hour’s battle can make your dining table look like a moon landing–complete with craters and weird aliens!

It kind of makes you wonder who the Bakugan Battle Arena was built for–excited kids, or their parents. The first and best reason to buy a Bakugan Battle Arena, really, is to save your furniture from the ravages of (pretend monster) war!

2. No more lost Bakugans. The Bakugan Battle Arena has bumpers on all four sides so that the spherical little toys won’t roll off the table and under the couch, refrigerator, or entertainment center in the case of an “undeployed” battler. This way you don’t have to make the “disgruntled kid vs. hernia form moving the fridge” decision.

3. No more broken toys. If the kids have been using the garage, sidewalk, or driveway to have their throw-down show-downs, they’ve probably broken at least a couple of the toys in the process. And more broken toys means more nagging you to buy, buy, buy!

The money you’ll spend on a Bakugan Battle Arena–about thirty-five bucks if you buy it online–will probably save you a lot more in the price of broken toys and peace of mind.

By: Masni Rizal Mansor
Perhaps the most widely used air conditioners are the window air conditioners. They are quite popular for heating and cooling in both domestic and commercial premises. The basic advantage of a window air conditioner is that unlike the central air conditioners and the split air conditioners, it fits well in the window giving a good look and it does not occupy any space of the room at all.

Moreover, window air conditioners do not need to be shifted every now and then from one place to the other. However, like any other air conditioning equipment, it produces noise, the intensity of which differs with the type and size of the window air conditioners. Constant noise can indeed be very disturbing and distressing to the home and surrounding residents.

It is, therefore, advisable for the consumer to compare window air conditioners by checking the sound power level labels on the unit or in the literature specifications. The noise levels are often given in decibel ratings and the higher the decibel level, the louder the unit will be. The sound pressure increases by a factor of ten for every 10-decibel increase. For example, 60 Decibels is 10 times louder than 50 Decibels and 100 times louder than 40 Decibels.

The compressor and the fan are combined in a single unit and mounted in the window air conditioners and this is the source of all the noise in the air conditioner. The other causes of noise could be worn bearings, cabinet rattles, dirty or rusty fan blades, worn rubber mountings and compressor wear. Regular maintenance can reduce the noise to some extent but with the passing of time, there is bound to be an increase in the level of the noise.

You should check whether your window air conditioner is vibrating or producing a rattling noise and if so, then it is not a normal situation. The reason for this can be improper installation or loose side panels. If, however, you hear a scraping noise, you should either take the help of an authorized service provider or you can also try to find out the cause and repair it yourself.

The following steps can help you in tracking the fault and repairing it:

You should tighten the screws holding the front panel onto the unit. You should check carefully the window all round the unit. You should then turn the window air conditioner on and press your hand against the sash. If you find that as you press your hand against the sash, the sound changes in pitch, then you should put some wooden shims in the gap between the window air conditioners frame and the sash. If, however, the pitch of the noise changes when you press your hand on the glass, you should use some insulating cellophane tape between the glass and the frame. You might have to use putty if that does not reduce the noise.

If you feel that the sound is originating from within the unit, you should take the unit out of the window and check to see if the fan blades are bent. If so, just bend them back so that they match the others.

The key here is planning and organization.

First you should select the type of vacation and its destination. Are you looking for a relaxing time on the beach, an exciting skiing vacation or a thrilling gambling junket to the islands? Once you have narrowed down the type of excursion you have chosen, it is time to do some research. You will want to find the peak time of the year to go for your particular trip along with the best prices on transportation and lodging. You can get the information from your travel agent or do it yourself on the Internet. Then depending on your decision, purchase the airline tickets, schedule the cruise, rent a car or reserve the hotel or campground. Arrange for transportation to and from the airport.

Allow enough time to get your traveling documents in order. For instance, ordering a notarized birth certificate or applying for a passport, visa, international driver’s license, travel insurance, etc. Be sure if you will be going as the solitary parent, to obtain a notarized letter of consent from you spouse or ex-spouse that you have the permission to bring the child with you to your destination. However if the other parent is deceased, you may need to present their death certificate. Then again, if you will be leaving your child with a guardian, give him or her a notarized letter allowing them to authorize emergency medical attention. Check to see if any mandatory inoculations are necessary for immunization to travel in the area you are going to be visiting. Verify that your health insurance is up-to-date.

Plan your itinerary because a well-planned itinerary will save you both time and money. For example, if you decide you really want to attend a special festival, concert or other activities while you are away, check out if it will require tickets or reservations and order them before hand. This will avoid arriving to find a long wait or the activity is sold out. Do not overload your schedule. See how long it will realistically take to get from place to place. What is the best way to get there? How long will you stay? Realize there will be delays caused by weather, transportation and possibly health issues.

You will want to make sure you have everything at home tended to while you are away. You will need someone to take care of your pets, plants and trim the lawn. You may wish to hire a house or pet sitter. Otherwise, you will have to arrange to have your pet boarded, the mail held at the Post Office and deliveries like the newspaper and bottled water temporarily stopped. Make sure that you supply your house sitter with a key and the alarm code to the house. Provide instructions for taking care of your pets. Also make a list of emergency phone numbers they might need, such as, the veterinary, police, fire department, alarm company and where you will be staying.

Shortly before you leave, make sure you have your prescriptions refilled. Pay any upcoming bills. Shop for things you will need to bring with you. Give yourself plenty of time to pack your luggage so you will not forget anything. Advise your alarm company and police department of the time you will be gone. Put lights and maybe a radio on timers so it looks and sounds like someone is home. Throw out anything in the refrigerator that will spoil. Make sure to have the credit cards, travelers checks, cash or foreign currency, reservation confirmations and traveling documents you will need.

Right before you depart on vacation, shut off all electrical appliances and unplug televisions and computers. Depending on the season, raise or lower the heat and air conditioning. Take out the garbage. Shut off the water to your washing machine and outside faucets. Check with the airline to confirm your flight is on schedule. Lock up the house and car. Get ready to have a fantastic vacation knowing everything has been taken care of due to your careful preparation.

Space is limited in my garden raised beds, so I have to garden vertically when I can and make use of every square inch. This year, I decided that squash and cucumbers would share a 4′x8′ bed. The cucumbers would need room to grow and I needed to build a trellis.

If you’re looking for a fancy trellis made by a woodworker or someone who can bend and twist wrought iron to make art, then you’ll have to look elsewhere. This is a quick and easy trellis made from wood and twine.

The posts are 1×2’s. You could use 2×4s but 1×2s are cheaper and they’re strong enough to support the weight of most veggies so why not save a few dollars. You’ll need two 1×2s to use as posts and one as a cross piece that goes across the top.

I avoid the whole old pressure treated wood (CCA) vs. new pressure treated wood (ACQ) in the garden argument by using regular lumber. It’s going to rot in a few years, but at $1.88 for an 8 foot 1×2, I’d rather replace the wood instead of worrying about chemicals leaching into the soil. Will they or won’t they? That’s a question for someone else.

Each post should be buried at least 18″ deep or if you’re building a trellis that will go inside a raised bed like mine, then you can secure it to the frame with 2 more screws. Remember that you’ll want the two posts to be the same height so that the cross piece is level. A laser level is a great tool to easily accomplish this. If you don’t have a laser level then place the cross piece on top and use a regular bubble level. Use a hammer to slowly tap the posts into the ground. If you keep knocking the cross piece off, then duct tape it. Once you’re level, use two 3 inch galvanized screws to secure each joint. If you’re worried about the wood cracking, then pre-drill your holes.

Now measure and make pencil marks one foot apart going down from the top and then along the cross piece. Partially drill a short screw with a large head (or add a washer) into each mark. These screws are for attaching your twine. Tie a knot around the first screw and then screw it in the rest of the way so that the twine is secure. Fasten the string going horizontally across the trellis and then going vertically, screwing the screws in as you go. When going from top to bottom, tie a knot in the twine every place that it crosses the horizontals.

After enjoying a nice harvest of cucumbers this summer, I was very happy with the results of this garden project. As I said before, my trellis may not look good enough for a gardening magazine but it sure did the job.

Once you’ve made the initial investment of a good, powerful pressure washer it will benefit you to take some time to explore all of the pressure washer accessories available. Pressure washer accessories can optimize the list of services you can offer customers and put you ahead of your competitors.

Pressure washer accessories, such as GFCI cords and plugs, brass couplings, hose restrictors, good pressure gauges, winterizing kits, battery boxes, unloader valves can extend the life of your existing equipment. They can also just simply make your job easier and more professional looking.

To expand the list of services you offer, consider adding a sand blaster (medium to heavy duty equipment is available) or sewer jetter (can clean pipes and tubes from 1” –6” in diameter) to your system. Chemical injectors are a necessity when you need the extra cleaning power of chemicals. There are high or low-pressure chemical kits with adjustable chemical injectors. There are metering valves, nozzles for distance or maximum pressure, and systems that save your pump, lance, hose and gun by having the chemicals by-pass them.

Add the service of duct cleaning to your repertoire, and shine above the competition even more. Made to be corrosion-resistant and with self-lubricating bearings, the Swiss made carbide swivel duct cleaner is one great pressure washer accessory. Working with hot or cold water, duct cleaners clean any kind of duct, vent, chimney, or chute. And don’t forget the market for cleaning restaurant hoods and trash chutes and even kegs and barrels.

Some surfaces can be cleaned with pressure and cold water alone, but many cleaning jobs will go faster with (and some downright require), hot water. If you don’t yet have the power of hot water, it should be one of your next pressure washer accessories. There are many types to choose from that can be added to existing cold water pressure units.

If you want to help the environment, there is another good pressure washer accessory to help you do so. The “wash water filter system” protects the environment by re-using wash water that has been filtered. When power washing floors, driveways, or any flat surface, this system harbors, collects, and then filters the dirty water. Using portable dams and drain covers, and a closed vacuum, state-of-the-art filter, and holding tank system, this wash water filter set-up makes sense economically and environmentally too.

For ease, comfort, and professionalism, there are pressure washer accessories such as foot valves (lets you operate the pump from a distance), extension wands and brush attachments, carts, skids, hose reels, magnetic starters, and so much more they are hard to list here. It will benefit the pressure washer owner to know of the many accessories available and their applications. For instance, by checking out the accessories available, you would learn that simply adding a rotary nozzle would increase cleaning power and efficiency for large, flat surfaces. A rotary nozzle uses centrifugal force and is 200% more efficient than a 25° flat fan nozzle. Rotary nozzles come in small (2,500 psi), medium (3,000 psi), large (4,350 psi) and extra large (5,000 psi), and there is a stainless steel, super-heavy-duty (7,350 psi) rotary nozzle.

Of course, the pressure washer accessories list includes replacement parts—from engines and pumps (and parts for them), through to tires for hose reels and hardware for all mechanisms.

If you have a big family and you usually bond over watching movies on the theater then a great way for you to be able to keep this family tradition is by buying your very own home movie theater system. This way you and your family will be able to enjoy your favorite movies at the comfort of your very own home whenever you want as well as whenever everyone’s available.

There is absolutely no need for you to wait in long lines anymore just to see a movie plus you and your family will be able to save more in the end considering that you will be making your own popcorn or buy your other snacks from the local grocery as opposed to paying for overpriced snacks at the theater.

If you are thinking of shopping for your very own home movie theater system, do be advised that these things don’t really come cheap. If you are not that picky then you can actually get yourself a secondhand home movie theater system which will of course come with certain kinks and in case you are good with electronics then try to check if the condition of the electronics that you are buying is still worth the price.

Another thing that you can do is get warehouse prices directly from the suppliers of the appliances and electronics. You might score special discounts if you buy a lot of items from them. When shopping for any kind of electronics always remember that you are practically assured of great discounts and equally great after-sales service only if you keep a good business relationship with your suppliers.
