Revolution in Home Automation

By: nick
Home appliance controls are changing from purely mechanical to fully electronic as microcontrollers are being incorporated into the designs. The migration in the industry from mechanical to electromechanical control, then to full electronic control has been ongoing for several years. Today, microcontrollers provide the intelligence to every electronic solution. The primary reasons driving the adoption of electronics are reliability, cost, and improved energy efficiency.

The functionality of the oven/cooker/range has been changing gradually over the last five years and is driven by consumer demand for new features. Microcontrollers support these new, innovative cooking appliance features. A Smart Kitchen survey carried out by MORI found that more than half of the consumers surveyed would rather technology made home life simpler than provided more information at work. Electronically controlled ovens are moving in to the high-end market to fulfill the needs of the consumers.

Automate your Home

Home automation is becoming more popular in new homes, but people in older homes may also want to add home automation to their homes as well. Home owners now have a better option of the Zigbee  technology over wired home automation systems. PC-based home automation is one of the easiest ways to get started. Both hard-wired and wireless home automation systems are available. Structured wiring consists of cables that get snaked through the walls of your house with outlets in convenient locations while the only wire involved with wireless technology is the power cord.

Since wireless technology can be susceptible to interference, most people in the home automation industry agree that structured wiring is more reliable. Structured wiring is more expensive to install, and once it's in, it's difficult to move if you decide you want a different access point for the control panel or touch screens.

If you don't have any major renovations planned in the near future, wireless technology will probably prove more cost efficient for you. Though it may not be the preferred choice, advances in the technology are making it more reliable all the time. Half the houses being built today are equipped with some kind of home automation.
